Abstract

ABSTRACT The electrolysis method, specifically electro-chlorination, involves treating seawater to produce hypochlorite ions, acting as disinfectants in ballast water. This method effectively reduces viable organisms to meet international regulations like IMO D-2 standards. The system demonstrated high efficacy in reducing organisms and suspended solids by 99.5% and 93.3%, respectively. It also maintained chemical parameters within acceptable ranges and reduced chlorophyll-a, nutrients, and heavy metals, showing minimal environmental impact. The system's performance was evaluated in various aspects, including organism reduction, suspended solids removal, chemical parameter maintenance, and environmental impact. Results highlighted its effectiveness, efficiency, and environmental sustainability, supporting broader application in maritime industries. Testing with seawater samples from the Eastern Obolo River confirmed its ability to meet IMO D-2 standards. The electrolysis-based system offers a promising solution for ballast water treatment, preventing invasive species spread and reducing environmental pollution. Its effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainability make it a valuable technology for the maritime sector. The system will utilize AUTOCAD software to create a detailed layout of the treatment plant, optimizing component arrangement, piping, and electrical connections. AUTOCAD ensures precise measurements and accurate representations for effective planning and construction. The project aims to design and fabricate a typical ballast water treatment plant using the electrolysis method, enhancing its implementation and performance in real-world applications.
