Abstract

The physicochemical analysis of some sachet water samples obtained from manufacturing companies in Maiduguri, Borno State, was carried out. The sachet water samples analyzed were J–Water, Labib Table Water, Mushidini Table Water, and Kuru Table Water, labeled as samples 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively. The physicochemical parameters of the samples were determined using standard analytical methods. The pH values, turbidity, and concentrations of selected heavy metals were evaluated. The iron (Fe) concentrations were recorded as 0.19 mg/L, 0.16 mg/L, 0.74 mg/L, and 0.03 mg/L for samples 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively. Magnesium (Mg) concentrations were 0.12 mg/L, 0.08 mg/L, 0.22 mg/L, and 0.06 mg/L respectively. Zinc (Zn) concentrations were also recorded as 0.22 mg/L, 0.04 mg/L, 0.07 mg/L, and trace amounts respectively. Some heavy metals analyzed were absent or not detected in the samples. Turbidity values showed that sample 1 had 0.26 NTU, while others were within acceptable limits. The mean values of some key parameters obtained for the study samples were 1.02 mg/L and 0.59 mg/L respectively, and were detected in all the samples analyzed. Overall, other parameters were relatively within the allowable limits set by WHO and NAFDAC standards for the permissibility of drinking water for domestic use.
