Abstract

Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity is reflected in the unique artistic motifs of its major ethnic groups, notably the Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa. These motifs—expressed through symbols, patterns, colors, and textile traditions—carry deep cultural, historical, and social meanings. This study investigates the integration of Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa motifs in the design and production of contemporary garments. The research examines the origins and symbolic significance of selected motifs from each ethnic group and explores methods of adapting them into modern fashion designs without compromising their cultural integrity. Using a design-based research approach, the study involves motif selection, conceptual sketch development, fabric manipulation, and garment construction. The findings demonstrate that the fusion of traditional motifs with contemporary fashion techniques enhances aesthetic appeal, promotes cultural identity, and supports the preservation of indigenous Nigerian art forms. The study concludes that integrating ethnic motifs into modern garments not only enriches creative expression but also strengthens cultural continuity and global appreciation of Nigerian fashion.
