Abstract

Abstract Gender equality in political participation remains a significant barrier to achieving inclusive governance globally. Despite various advocacy efforts, women continue to face systemic barriers that limit their involvement in political leadership. This study examines gender equality in political participation in three selected local government areas in Osun West, Osun State: Iwo, Ede, and Ejigbo. The research highlights the underrepresentation of women in politics, driven by socio-cultural biases, discrimination, and economic challenges. For the project topic "Gender equality and Women Participation in Politics," Liberal Feminism is the most fitting theoretical framework. This theory emphasizes the need for legal and institutional reforms to eliminate the barriers that hinder women's political participation. It aligns with the project's focus on addressing structural equality by advocating for gender quotas and affirmative action policies, which have been proven to enhance women's representation in governance. The study adopts a descriptive survey research design, distributing 100 questionnaires to assess perceptions, experiences, and attitudes toward women's participation in politics. Covering the period from 2015 to 2023, this research provides insights into the impact of political events on women's representation. The findings underscore the need for gender-inclusive policies, educational empowerment, financial support for female political aspirants, and leadership development initiatives to foster women's engagement in governance. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge by offering a localized perspective on gender disparities in political participation within Osun State and suggesting practical measures for achieving greater gender equality in governance. The government should implement and enforce policies that promote gender equality in politics, including quotas for female representation and anti-discrimination laws to protect women in political spaces.
