Abstract

This study examined the relationship between principals’ management variables and teachers’ job effectiveness in private secondary schools in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State. The study was motivated by growing concerns over declining teacher commitment, instructional quality, and students’ academic performance in some private secondary schools, which may be linked to administrative practices. Specifically, the study investigated how principals’ leadership style, communication patterns, supervision of instruction, motivation strategies, and decision-making processes influence teachers’ job effectiveness. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population comprised all teachers in registered private secondary schools in Obubra Local Government Area. A structured questionnaire titled Principals’ Management Variables and Teachers’ Job Effectiveness Questionnaire (PMVTJEQ) was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by experts in Educational Administration and Measurement and Evaluation, and its reliability was established using Cronbach Alpha reliability method. Data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistics to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that principals’ leadership style, effective communication, regular instructional supervision, teacher motivation, and participatory decision-making significantly influence teachers’ job effectiveness. The study concluded that positive and supportive management practices enhance teachers’ commitment, instructional delivery, classroom management, and overall performance. It was recommended that private school proprietors and educational stakeholders should organize regular training and leadership development programmes for principals to strengthen managerial competencies. Additionally, principals should adopt democratic leadership approaches, maintain open communication channels, and implement effective motivation strategies to improve teachers’ job effectiveness and overall school performance.
