EFFECT OF BOKO HARAM INSURGENCY ON THE LIVELIHOOD OF TRADERS IN JERE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF BORNO STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the effect of the Boko Haram insurgency on the livelihood of traders in Jere Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria. The persistent activities of the insurgents have led to insecurity, displacement, loss of lives and property, and the disruption of socio-economic activities in the region. The main objective of the study was to assess how the insurgency has affected trading activities, income levels, market accessibility, and overall welfare of traders in Jere. Both primary and secondary data were utilized for the research. Primary data were obtained through the administration of structured questionnaires and interviews conducted among selected traders within the area, while secondary data were sourced from journals, reports, and government publications. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The findings revealed that the insurgency has significantly disrupted trading operations, reduced business capital, limited access to markets, and increased poverty among traders. Many respondents reported relocation of business activities, reduced customer patronage, and increased cost of goods and transportation. The study concludes that Boko Haram insurgency has had a profound negative impact on the economic livelihood of traders in Jere Local Government Area. It recommends that government and humanitarian agencies should intensify efforts to restore peace, rebuild market infrastructure, provide security, and offer financial support to affected traders to revive the local economy.
