Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the psychological impacts of flooding on residents of Maiduguri, Borno State, with a specific focus on the major flood events of 2022 and 2024. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative survey data with qualitative insights to provide a comprehensive understanding of how flood exposure affects mental health. The findings reveal a high prevalence of psychological distress among flood victims, with anxiety, insomnia, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) emerging as the most common symptoms. A strong positive correlation was found between the severity of flood exposure and the intensity of psychological distress, indicating that individuals who experienced greater loss or displacement faced significantly higher mental health challenges. Despite the magnitude of psychological needs, the study uncovered low levels of awareness and utilization of available mental health services. Barriers such as limited access, economic hardship, cultural stigma, and inadequate service provision were identified as key factors impeding mental health care. The study emphasizes the urgent need to integrate mental health support into disaster preparednessandresponseframeworks, highlightingtheimportanceofearlyintervention, community awareness, and culturally sensitive care. The study concludes that effective disaster management must address not only physical reconstruction but also the psychosocial rehabilitation of affected individuals. Recommendations include increasing public awareness, expanding mental health infrastructure, integrating psychosocial support into emergency response plans, removing financial barriers to care, andfostering community-based support systems. By implementing these strategies, policymakers and stakeholders can enhance resilience and promote mental well-being in flood-prone communities.
