Abstract

The study was carried out to examine the effect of GeoGebra on junior secondary school students’ academic performance in geometry concept in Mathematics in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. In order to achieve this purpose, three objectives, three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The design for the study was quasi- experimental design. The population for the study consisted of all the 3,238 junior secondary two (JS2) students in the 16 public secondary schools in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. The sample for the study consisted of 100 junior secondary two (JS2) students which were drawn from two intact classes in two secondary schools in the study area. Simple random sampling technique was used for the selection. A researcher-developed instrument tagged “Mathematics Performance Test in Geometry (MPTG)” was used for data collection. The instrument was subjected to face and content validation. A reliability coefficient of 0.89 was obtained for the instrument using Kuder Richardson 20 formula. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while independent t-test was used to test the hypotheses at .05 level of significance. The findings showed that there is significant difference in the mean performance score of students taught the concept of circle geometry in mathematics using GeoGebra and conventional teaching strategy; there is no significant difference in the mean performance score of male and female students taught the concept of circle geometry in mathematics using GeoGebra ; and there is no significant difference in the mean performance score of male and female students taught the concept of circle geometry in mathematics using conventional teaching strategy. Based on the finding of the study, it was concluded that GeoGebra enhanced junior secondary school students’ academic performance in geometry concept in Mathematics in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. It was recommended among others that, authors of Mathematics textbooks should include activities that will encourage the use of GeoGebra by the teachers and students.
