Abstract

The hepatoprotective effect of ethanolic extract of Ceiba pentandra leaf in Wistar rats was studied. Fresh leaves of Ceiba pentandra were collected and ethanol samples of the extract were prepared. A total of 25 rats were used. The rats were divided into 5 groups of 5 rats in each group, comprising control group, group 2 {negative control administered KBrO3 only), group 3 (positive control administered KBrO3 and then treated with the standard drug vitamin C), group 4 (low dose, administered KBrQ3 and then treated with 400myg/kg of Ceiba pentandra leaf extract) and group 5 (high dose, administered KBrO3 and then treated with 800mag/kg of Ceiba pentandra leaf extract). At the end of a 14-day period, the animals were sacrificed, blood samples were collected, centrifuged and serum was extracted and assayed for liver enzymes, such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT). The results obtained showed a significant (P
