PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND ANTIFUNGAL SCREENINGS OF TERMINALIA CATAPPA (UMBRELLA TREE LEAF).
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Phytochemical analysis and antifugal activity of Terminalia catappa on candida albican was investigated using Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method. The plant leaves were extracted using aqueous and ethanoic extraction method. The result of phytochemical screening of aqueous extracts revealed the presence of Tannins (+), flavonoids (+), Alkaloids (+) and Anthroquenoin (+). However, Saponins, Glycoside and steroids were absent. The phytochemical screening of of Ethanolic extract revealed the presence of tannins (+), Saponins (++), Flavonoid (++), Glycoside (+), Steroids (+) and Anthroquenoin (+). However, steroids were absent. Antifugal activity of the extract against candida albican revealed a Mean Zone of Inhibition (MZI) of 24.67mm,14.67mm and 8.1mm respectively at 100%, 75% and 50% concentration of Ethanoic extract. The result revealed that the Mean Zone of Inhibition (MZI) of Aqueous extraction was 19.73mm,14.77mm and 7.47mm at 100%, 75% and 50% concentration respectively. From the results it can be deducted that Ethanolic extract exhibit high antifugal activity at 100% concentration. The use of Terminalia catappa for the treatment of Candida albican has shown a positive result. It is therefore recommended that Terminalia catappa leaves extract should be used for management and treatment of fungi infection caused by Candida albican.
