CONTRIBUTION OF AGRICULTURE TO REVENUE GENERATION IN NIGERIA FROM 2007 TO 2024
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the contribution of agriculture to revenue generation in Nigeria from 2007 to 2024, focusing on three key sectors: crop production, livestock, and fishing. Agriculture is a vital component of Nigeria's economy, accounting for a significant portion of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and providing employment opportunities for millions. Despite its potential, the agricultural sector faces numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, ineffective policy implementation, and climate change impacts, which hinder its ability to maximize revenue generation. The research employs a quantitative methodology, utilizing panel data regression analysis to assess the relationships between agricultural outputs and economic performance. Data were collected from reputable sources, including the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and relevant literature. The study aims to provide empirical evidence on the extent to which each agricultural sector contributes to revenue generation, offering insights that can inform policy development and investment strategies. Findings reveal that while crop production and the livestock sector do not significantly impact revenue generation, the fishing sector demonstrates a strong positive influence. The lack of significant contributions from crop production and livestock highlights systemic barriers such as inadequate market access and poor integration into agricultural policies. In contrast, the fishing sector's performance underscores the importance of sustainable practices and targeted investments to enhance its economic impact. The study concludes with recommendations for policymakers to prioritize infrastructure development, provide targeted support for farmers, and promote sustainable agricultural practices across all sectors.
