IMPACT OF INFORMATION LITERACY PROGRAMMES ON ACADEMIC SUCCESS IN MUHAMMADU WABI LIBRARY, FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC BAUCHI
Abstract
This study investigated the impact of information literacy (IL) programmes on students’ academic success at Muhammadu Wabi Library, Federal Polytechnic Bauchi. Despite the introduction of IL initiatives in Nigerian polytechnics, their measurable effects on academic outcomes remain limited. The study focused on four objectives: to determine how library orientation, OPAC training, electronic resources training, and user education workshops influence students’ academic performance. A descriptive survey design was employed using purposive sampling of 38 HND II students. Data were collected through a validated questionnaire and analyzed with descriptive statistics using SPSS version 25. Findings revealed that 78% of respondents reported improved research performance after library orientation. OPAC and e-resources training enhanced access to materials, while user education improved citation and referencing skills. Challenges included limited computer access and inconsistent practical engagement. The study concludes that structured, practice-based IL programmes significantly enhance students’ academic performance and recommends continuous evaluation and tailored interventions to sustain their effectiveness
