A RESEARCH ON DEPOSTITIONAL FACIE DISTRIBUTION OF THE OGWASHI FORMATION IN ANWAI NORTHERN NIGER DELTA BASIN
Abstract
This research investigates the depositional facies distribution of the Ogwashi Formation in Anwai, Northern Niger Delta Basin, focusing on understanding the sedimentary processes and environments that shaped this region. Fieldwork included systematic sampling and detailed outcrop descriptions, complemented by laboratory analyses such as sieve analysis to determine grain size distribution. Key findings reveal a diverse range of sedimentary facies, from high-energy fluvial channels to low-energy swampy environments, indicating a dynamic interplay of fluvial and marine influences. The study identified significant variations in grain sizes, with coarse-grained sediments suggesting high-energy depositional environments, while finer-grained sediments indicate lower energy settings. These results were correlated with field observations and outcrop descriptions to provide a comprehensive understanding of the paleoenvironmental conditions during the deposition of the Ogwashi Formation. This research contributes to a detailed and dynamic picture of the Ogwashi Formation, highlighting its complexity and potential for hydrocarbon resources. The integration of field data and laboratory analyses underscores the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in geological studies and supports the sustainable exploration and development of this significant formation.
