THE IMPACT OF INSECURITY ON BUSINESS PERFORMANCE

ABSTRACT The study examines the impact of insecurity on the performance of businesses in Borno State. Boko Haram literally means “Western Education is divinely forbidden”. It is an Arabic/Hausa phrase that connotes Book (adulterated in pronunciation as Boko –Western Education); HARAM (anything forbidden in Islam). Thus the philosophy of the proponents of such belief is that acceptance and practice of western education as well as culture is a sin. In trying to buttress the sinful nature of western education/culture. Boko Haram Insurgency is a threat not only to the operation of SMEs but to the development of any nation found its self in this dilemma The research adopted the Frustration-Aggression Theory. The research used survey. The population of the study was two thousand two hundred and twelve (2,212) registered businesses with the Corporate Affairs Commission. The sample size for this research work will constitute 325 selected businesses from Maiduguri Metropolis. The research concludes that there is impact of Boko Haram insurgency on turnover of small and medium industry in Maiduguri Metropolis, there is impact of Boko haram insurgency on profitability of small and medium industry in Maiduguri Metropolis and there is impact of Boko Haram insurgency on access to finance of small and medium-scale industry in Maiduguri Metropolis, Borno State. The study recommends that government should create job opportunities for young people: Whether in Nigeria where the Boko Haram group originated or in neighbouring countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger where it has found a recruitment pool, limited opportunities for legitimate livelihood have made young people more vulnerable and hence more intrigued in joining insurgent groups.
