Abstract

Abstract This study examined the role of local government administration in rural development in Nigeria, focusing on Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State between 2021 and 2024. Local governments are constitutionally recognized as the third tier of government and are expected to facilitate grassroots development through provision of basic amenities, agricultural support, primary healthcare, and rural infrastructure. However, rural communities in many parts of Nigeria continue to experience underdevelopment, raising questions about the effectiveness of local government administration. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews administered to residents, local government staff, and community leaders. Findings revealed that while the local government undertook certain developmental projects such as road grading, primary school renovations, and health outreach programs, challenges including inadequate funding, political interference, insecurity, and administrative inefficiencies limited its overall impact. The study concludes that strengthening financial autonomy, enhancing accountability, and promoting community participation are essential for improving rural development outcomes. Keywords: Local government administration, rural development, grassroots governance, decentralization, Benue State.
