Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive exploration of the visual and psychological challenges experienced by geriatric patients affected by age- related ocular disorders. The research encompassed 243 participants, who were subjected to a detailed analysis involving descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Notably, the prevailing ocular challenges encompassed cataract, glaucoma, age- related macular degeneration (AMD), and diabetic retinopathy, significantly impacting participants' daily lives. Among the diverse challenges encountered, tasks such as reading was the most severe visual challenge reported with a mean score of 4.21±0.874.21±0.87 , recognizing faces (3.95±0.96)(3.95±0.96) , driving (3.82±1.12)(3.82±1.12) , watching TV (3.76±1.03)(3.76±1.03) , and performing daily activities surfaced as particularly problematic. Assessing quality of life was achieved using the WHOQOL- BREF questionnaire, with findings indicating moderate scores across visual (13.42)(13.42) , psychological (12.36)(12.36) , social relationship (6.78)(6.78) , and environmental domains (14.21)(14.21) . Intriguingly, high levels of psychological distress were revealed, particularly in the realms of anxiety with mean score of 14.92±2.3414.92±2.34 and depression with mean score of 7.86±2.187.86±2.18 , unveiling the intricate connection between ocular disorders and mental well- being. Ultimately, this study underscores the necessity for a comprehensive healthcare approach that addresses not only the physiological implications of ocular disorders but also their profound psychological impact. Emphasizing early detection, intervention strategies, fostering supportive networks, and implementing targeted rehabilitation programs are recommended to enhance patients' overall well- being. The study augments existing knowledge concerning geriatric patients' challenges related to ocular disorders, advocating for integrated healthcare frameworks that holistically cater to their multifaceted needs.
