THE IMPACT OF CLASS SIZE ON TEACHING AND LEARNING IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN MAIDUGURI, BORNO STATE
Abstract
This study examined the impact of class size on teaching and learning in senior secondary schools in Maiduguri, Borno State. The objectives were to determine the relationship between class size and teaching quality, student performance, and engagement. A descriptive survey design was adopted with a sample of 200 respondents drawn from four senior secondary schools in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews and analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed a significant negative correlation between class size and teaching effectiveness (r = –0.62, p < 0.01) and between class size and student engagement (r = –0.57, p < 0.01). The study concluded that large class sizes adversely affect instructional quality, student participation, and academic achievement. It was recommended that government and school administrators reduce class sizes, recruit more teachers, expand infrastructure, and provide professional development for teachers to effectively manage classroom diversity.
