FABRICATION AND EVALUATION OF EVAPORATIVE COOLING SYSTEM FOR FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
Abstract
The study was conducted in other to investigate and come up with a long lasting solution to spoilage of food material (fruits and vegetables). An evaporative cooling system was constructed and evaluated at the department of agricultural and bio environmental engineering technology. Two experiments were observed which are; control (T1) and the machine (T2) evaluation. The control (T1) is the food kept under ambient temperature while (T2) is stored. After the experiment, it was discovered there is great margin in spoilage between the fruits and vegetable kept/stored under ambient temperature and the one stored in the evaporative cooling system. The average result obtained during this experiment are; (a). Control (T1), relative humidity (%) and temperature (oc) are( RH 81% and Temp 25.75oc), while (b): the result obtained from the evaporative cooling system (T2) are ( RH 93.5% and temp 21.75oc) The result obtained from the evaporative cooling system was impressive and was able to stored food (fruits and vegetables) for the period of two days without spoilage. After such evaluation, an inference was drawn that the machine is considered significant and one among the most economical means/system of storage. Also, it evaluated and found that it’s the simplest means of food storage with minimum maintenance cost. Therefore, it is highly recommended for storage of fruits (fruits and vegetables).
