Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examined the role of serial acquisitions in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Library, Bauchi. It focused on procedures and policies, challenges affecting acquisitions, and strategies for improvement. The objectives were to assess the procedures guiding serial acquisitions, identify major challenges, and propose strategies to enhance efficiency. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and involved sixteen staff members directly engaged in serial acquisitions, including librarians, acquisitions officers, and technical staff. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation. Findings revealed that ATBU Library operates with documented procedures and acquisition policies aligned with academic needs, though staff role ambiguity reduces coordination. Major challenges identified include inadequate funding, vendor delays, and limited ICT infrastructure. Staff training, automation of acquisition processes, periodic user needs assessments, and collaboration with consortia were found effective for improvement. The study concluded that while the library’s serial acquisition system is functional, targeted reforms are needed to improve efficiency, ensure timely access to resources, and strengthen academic support. It recommends clarifying staff responsibilities, increasing budgetary support, upgrading ICT facilities, and building staff capacity to enhance serial acquisition performance and service delivery. Keywords: Serial acquisitions, academic libraries, ATBU Library, acquisition policies, challenges, automation, ICT infrastructure, staff training.
