TECHNOLOGIZING THE CRAFT: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE ROLE OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY IN CONTEMPORARY ACTING
Abstract
Technologizing the Craft: A Critical Analysis of the Role of Digital Technology in Contemporary
Acting investigates the profound influence of digital technologies on the practice and perception
of acting in contemporary theatre. Utilizing a blend of theoretical analysis, case studies of
innovative productions, and insights from theatre practitioners, the project examines how
technologies such as virtual reality, motion capture, green screen and real-time digital interfaces
redefine the actor’s role, stage dynamics, and audience interaction. The study highlights the
potential of digital tools to create immersive and interactive theatrical experiences while raising
critical questions about preserving the emotional authenticity and human connection central to
acting. Drawing on concepts like responsive cohesion and digital theatre, it explores the synergy
between human performers and digital systems, addressing challenges such as technological
accessibility and ethical implications of automation in performance. The project proposes a
framework for integrating digital innovation with traditional craft, offering valuable perspectives
for theatre artists and researchers shaping the future of performance in a digital era.
