Abstract

This study explores public perception of Virtual Reality (VR) broadcasting in Nigeria, focusing on its relevance to the country’s socio-cultural and ecological context. Adopting a survey research design, data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 310 respondents from diverse demographic backgrounds. The study is grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DIT), which explain user behavior and technology adoption. Findings reveal low public awareness and limited understanding of VR broadcasting, with most respondents associating VR primarily with gaming. Cultural disconnect, high equipment costs, poor internet infrastructure, and limited local content were identified as major barriers to acceptance. However, younger and urban populations showed more awareness and interest, especially when VR content was culturally relevant. Respondents emphasized the importance of integrating Nigerian stories, language, and traditions to make VR content more engaging. The study recommends public education campaigns, development of localized VR content, incorporation of VR in education and media training, and improved infrastructure to foster broader acceptance. These measures aim to enhance media engagement and promote ecological awareness through immersive technology in Nigeria.
