KINETICS OF THE CORROSION INHIBITION OF MILD STEEL IN BASE MEDIUM USING EXPIRED FLUCONAZOLE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The kinetics of corrosion inhibition of mild steel in base medium using expired fluconazole was investigated in this study. The corrosion inhibition efficiency of expired fluconazole was evaluated using weight loss and time-dependent techniques. Mild steel, commonly used in industrial applications, is prone to corrosion, especially in basic environments. The use of expired pharmaceuticals as corrosion inhibitors presents a sustainable and cost-effective approach to mitigating corrosion. Expired fluconazole was tested as an inhibitor to explore its potential in reducing corrosion rates. The research was conducted using simple time dependent methods, analyzing the inhibition efficiency of fluconazole over various concentrations and time intervals. The experimental results showed that fluconazole significantly reduced the corrosion rate of mild steel. The adsorption of fluconazole on the steel surface was evaluated using different kinetics models, including zero, first and second order kinetics to better understand the interaction mechanisms. The kinetic parameters implications of the adsorption process were also studied. The results indicate that expired fluconazole acts as an effective corrosion inhibitor by forming a protective film on the steel surface, which blocks corrosive agents. The study's findings contribute to the broader field of corrosion science, particularly in the development of environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors using waste materials like expired pharmaceuticals.
