Abstract

Stress has been prevalent in the modern life patterns of people, which affects the dynamism of human skills. People become overwhelmed by the pressure of their work/responsibilities, while some are frustrated in trying to satisfy one duty or the other. So, the general objective of the study is assessing the effect of human resource variables on work-related stress in the Nigerian banking industry. Specifically, the study addressed the following: to evaluate the effect of performance appraisal on work-related stress, to determine the influence of training and development on work-related stress, and to determine career management and how it affects work-related stress in the Nigerian banking industry. The study was anchored on ERG theory and two-factor theory. Cross-sectional research design was used in the study. The Taro Yamane sample size formula was used to derive a sample of 104 participants drawn from Zenith Bank Plc, Fidelity Bank, and Access Bank Plc using the simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was employed as the data instrument. The collected data was analyzed using the percentage and frequency method for descriptive statistics and linear regression for inferential statistics. The finding showed that performance appraisal, training and development, and career management had a significant effect on work-related stress in the Nigerian banking industry with p-values of 0.004, 0.002, and 0.000, respectively, which were less than the alpha value (α=0.005). The study concludes that there is a relationship between career management practices, performance appraisals, and training and development programs in addressing work-related stress among employees in the Nigerian banking industry. The study recommends that the management team of banks in Nigeria should improve communication regarding career management practices to ensure that all employees understand the available resources and how these initiatives can support their career growth.
