Abstract

The study was carried out to examine predict-observe explain (POE) teaching strategy and secondary school Biology students’ academic performance in Onna Local Government Area. In order to achieve this purpose, three objectives, three research questions and three null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The design for the study was quasi- experimental design. The population for the study consisted of all the 1969 senior secondary two students in the nine public secondary schools in Onna Local Government Area. The sample for the study consisted of 105 senior secondary two (SS 2) students were drawn from two intact classes in two secondary schools in the study area. Simple random sampling technique was used for the selection. The instrument used for the study was Biology Performance Test (BPT)”. The instrument was subjected to face and content validity. A reliability coefficient of 0.82 was obtained for the instrument using test-retest method. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while independent t-test was used for testing the hypotheses. The findings of this study showed that there was significant difference between the academic performance scores of students taught Biology concept of food test using predict-observe explain (POE) teaching strategy and those students taught without predict-observe-explain (POE) teaching strategy. The finding also showed There was significant difference between the academic performance mean scores of male and female students taught Biology concept using predict-observe explain (POE) teaching strategy in favour of male. Finally, the findings revealed that there was no significant difference between male and female students’ post academic performance test mean scores taught without predict-observe explain (POE) teaching strategy group. Based on the findings, it was concluded that predict-observe explain (POE) teaching strategy enhanced students academic performance in Biology in public secondary schools in Onna Local Government Area of AkwaIbom State. Based on the conclusions, it was recommended among others that,Biology teachers should adopt predict- observe explain (POE) teaching strategy in this 21st century classroom to encourage group learning among students.
