Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was designed to elucidate the effect of aqueous extracts of Terminalia catappa on PCV level. Nine (9) wistar Rats were randomly assigned into 3 groups of 3 Rats each. Group 1 (control) was fed on normal pellet feed + drinking water, the test groups (group 2 and 3) in addition received extract treatment at a dose of 100mg/kgbwt and 200mg/kgbwt respectively. The feeding regimens lasted for 14 days. Results show that the extract was dose dependent to significantly improve the mean RBC count and PCV values for the test groups compared to the control. Even the results here showed good value for the improvement of PCV in the albino rat, it is important to establish that safety of the plants extract before been used, since research had shown elsewhere that it is capable of decreasing WBC values which is needed to fight germ in the body. More studies should also be carried out to ascertain the precise mechanism in which the aqueous extract of Terminalia catappa elicits its haematopoietic effect in wistar Rats and also the active principles involved which can enhance plant based drug development.
