Abstract

ABSTRACT This research examined the contribution of cooperative practices on workers’ performance in an organization, with focus on ASUP Thrift at Federal Polytechnic Bauchi. The study specifically assessed how cooperative loans, commodities, and financial support influence the welfare and productivity of members. A quantitative survey design was adopted, using structured questionnaires administered to a sample of 127 respondents, out of which 120 were duly completed and returned, representing a 94.5% response rate. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests to test the stated hypotheses. The findings revealed that cooperative loans significantly reduced financial stress and enabled members to meet pressing needs, thereby enhancing concentration and productivity at work. Commodities provided at subsidized rates were also found to motivate members and improve job satisfaction, while the cooperative system generally enhanced members’ financial well-being. However, challenges such as limited capital and delays in loan disbursement were identified as constraints to maximizing these benefits. The study concludes that cooperative thrift and credit societies play a vital role in improving workers’ performance by promoting financial inclusion, stability, and motivation. It recommends that ASUP Thrift should strengthen its management processes, improve transparency and efficiency in loan disbursement, and explore external funding partnerships to increase capital base. Policymakers and organizational leaders are equally encouraged to support cooperative societies as sustainable mechanisms for employee empowerment and organizational productivity.
