Abstract

ABSTRACT Small-scale businesses play a vital role in the economic development of Nigeria. In cities like Aba in Abia State, they represent the backbone of employment, innovation, and grassroots economic activity. However, many of these businesses struggle with financial instability, poor planning, and eventual collapse. One major reason identified by scholars and practitioners is the absence or poor use of accounting practices. This study investigates accounting as an indispensable tool in the management and growth of small-scale businesses in Abia State, with specific focus on selected businesses in Aba. The research explores how accounting practices such as record keeping, financial reporting, budgeting, and cost control influence business performance and sustainability. A survey research design was adopted for the study. Data were collected from owners and managers of selected small-scale businesses through structured questionnaires. The responses were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques such as percentages and frequency distribution. The findings revealed that many small-scale businesses in Aba operate without proper accounting systems. However, businesses that maintain basic accounting records demonstrate better financial control, improved decision-making, and higher chances of growth. The study concludes that accounting plays a critical role in guiding business owners toward efficient management of resources. The study recommends that small-scale business owners should adopt basic accounting practices, seek professional guidance where necessary, and participate in financial management training programs to enhance their business sustainability.
