Abstract

This study examines the effect of sustainability reporting disclosures on the financial performance of listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria. The growing emphasis on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices has increased the need for corporate transparency and accountability, particularly among publicly traded firms. The study investigates whether sustainability disclosures significantly influence key financial performance indicators such as return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), and net profit margin. An ex-post facto research design was adopted, using secondary data obtained from the annual reports of selected listed consumer goods companies over a specified period. Sustainability disclosure was measured using an index constructed from environmental, social, and governance reporting components, while financial performance variables were analyzed using regression techniques. The findings reveal that sustainability reporting disclosures have a positive and statistically significant relationship with financial performance, suggesting that firms that engage in transparent sustainability practices tend to achieve improved profitability and enhanced corporate reputation. The study concludes that sustainability reporting is not merely a compliance requirement but a strategic tool for long-term value creation. It is therefore recommended that listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria strengthen their sustainability disclosure practices to enhance stakeholder confidence and improve overall financial performance.
