Abstract

Photochemical are non-nutritive plant chemicals that have protective or diseases preventive properties. It is well-known that plants produce the chemicals to protect themselves but recent researches demonstrate that they can also protect humans against diseases. The aim of the study was to screen and determine the phytochemical content (alkaloid. Flavonoids, phenols, steroids, tannins, saponins, anthraquinone, glycosides and reducing compounds) and the anti-oxidant activities in dried and wet samples of ocimum gratissimum were obtained from Calabar south (pavelion) Cross River State, Nigeria. Then they were taken to the chemistry lab at the University of Cross River State Calabar, Nigeria for identification. Analysis was done on the sample s of the leaves using standard procedures of the Association of Analytical Chemists (AOAC). The result showed that the leaf of Ocimum gratissimum had significantly higher values in all photochemical contents. Moreover, ocimum gratissimum in saponins (14.860+2.860); Alkaloids (11.770+1960.),Flavonoids (13.910 +3.490.) Tannins (3.546+0.628.) Glycoside (15.784+0.01) and Phonolic (4.860+0.090). However , O. gratissimum had significantly higher values in Glycoside (15.546+0.01) and Tanin has the lowest percentage of (3.546+0.628.) (5g) (Scent leaf) Ocimum gratissimum has natural medicine use a well as nutritional values with the identification and quantification of some bioactive chemical constituents. The phytochemical screening of scent leaf (ocimum gratissimum) is medicinal and bioactive
