Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examined the impact of peacebuilding efforts by the Allamin Foundation for Peace and Development in Maiduguri, focusing on its role in promoting reconciliation and social cohesion among conflict-affected communities. The research specifically aimed to assess the nature of the foundation’s peacebuilding programs, their effectiveness in fostering social cohesion, and the challenges encountered in implementing sustainable interventions. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, with a sample of 384 respondents drawn from community members, civil servants, students, entrepreneurs, and NGO personnel. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using frequency distributions, percentages, and mean scores. Findings revealed that the foundation’s key peacebuilding initiatives include community dialogues and town hall meetings (32.3% strongly agree; 39.3% agree), mediation and conflict resolution workshops (28.4% strongly agree; 37.8% agree), and youth empowerment programs (34.1% strongly agree; 36.2% agree), demonstrating a multifaceted approach to addressing conflict. The programs have positively impacted reconciliation and social cohesion, with 34.9% of respondents strongly agreeing and 37.0% agreeing that trust among community members has improved, while 33.6% strongly agree and 36.5% agree that dialogue and peaceful communication have increased. However, the foundation faces significant challenges, including limited funding and resources (37.2% strongly agree; 35.9% agree), insecurity (33.6% strongly agree; 36.7% agree), and lack of skilled personnel (24.7% strongly agree; 33.1% agree), which constrain the sustainability of its interventions. The study concludes that while the Allamin Foundation for Peace and Development has made notable contributions to promoting peace, reconciliation, and community cohesion, addressing resource, security, and capacity challenges is crucial for sustaining its impact. It is recommended that the foundation strengthen funding, enhance community engagement, maintain political neutrality, and build the capacity of personnel to improve the effectiveness of its peacebuilding programs.
