Abstract

ABSTRACT This project proposes a poultry farm design for Maiduguri aimed at improving thermal comfort in response to the region’s hot-dry climate. Existing poultry houses in Maiduguri experience excessive heat, poor ventilation, and high bird mortality. Through literature review and case studies of Goteri Farm and the Poultry Production Unit (PPU), the study identifies key design problems such as poor orientation, lack of cooling systems, and heat-absorbing materials. The proposed design applies climate-responsive strategies including proper east-west orientation, adequate ventilation, reflective roofing, insulation, shading, landscaping, and cooling systems such as foggers and roof drenchers. These measures help reduce heat stress, improve bird welfare, and enhance productivity. The project demonstrates that architectural design plays a major role in achieving thermal comfort in poultry farms within hot-dry regions like Maiduguri.
