Abstract

ABSTRACT Underground water quality in an industrial environment continues to be a major concern due to the various activities that have continually been of impact negatively on the underground water, therefore, this project work is aimed at assessing/investigating the impacts of industrialization on the quality of underground water of Ebenco facility which is a waste management company. A random sampling technique was used to collect two (2) borehole samples from the different locations within the waste management facility and one (1) control sample outside thefacility. Physiochemical parameters were analyzed using standard methods and the heavy metal parameters were analyzed using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The physiochemical parameters that were investigated include: pH, Electrical Conductivity(EC), Total Dissolve Solid (TDS), Alkalinity, Turbidity, Temperature, Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Chloride, Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate, Ammonia, Total Hardness (TH), and Dissolve Oxygen(DO), and Heavy metals; Lead, Iron, Zinc, Copper and Chromium were also analyzed. The result obtained from the analyzed samples was compared with that of the analyzed control samples as well as the World Health Organisation (WHO) Standard. Findings from this research work show that some of the physiochemical values obtained from the analyzed samples such as pH (Slightly Acidic; Ctrl=6.24, BH1=6.12, BH2=6.06), Turbidity (Ctrl=6.67NTU, BH1=4.62NTU, BH2=2.69NTU) are not within the acceptable range of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Standard for underground water (6.5-8.5 and 1-5NTU respectively). It was also found that all samples analyzed for heavy metals are within the WHO standard. Conclusively based on findings, it shows that the underground water in the waste management around the waste management facility contains infinitesimal exceedances of index of pollution. Also this result shows that majority of the parameters analyzed were within the WHO standard limits for drinking water.
