ANTIBIOTICS RESISTANCE PROFILE OF ENTEROCOCCUS SPECIES AND CAMPYLOBACTER SPECIES ISOLATED FROM FISH POND EFFLUENTS IN CALABAR METROPOLIS OF CROSS RIVER STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
Several pathogens have been shown to emonsioty asi pines fussy a Te
some specific aa ntibiotics over a short period of time, cithe : dv aimed to pressure, antibiotics abuse by humans or over imals. This study aim use In animais Campylobacter
evaluate the antibiotic resistance profile of Enterococcus species a ane were
species isolated from fish pond effluents in Calabar. A iota] of sight (3) we teria
inoculated using pour plate method. Result revealed that the total heterotrop 1c 4 iy
counts from fish pond samples ranges from 1.02x10%fwml to 4.90x10°cfw/ml. The
lowest count was recorded by SW4, and the highest by sample SW1. The total coliform
ranges from 5.3x10°cfu/ml to 8.1x10°cfu/ml. The lowest count recorded by sample SW8,
and the highest by sample SW7. Regarding antibiotic susceptibility test of Enterococcus
spp. and Campylobacter spp. Isolates. The results revealed marked differences among
bacterial isolates in their susceptibility and resistance patterns to antibiotics using Clinical
Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) Guidelines to determine the susceptibility of the
antibiotics to the bacteria isolates. The highest rate of resistance (83.3%) was recorded
against Erythromycin and tetracycline by all isolated species while augmentin (16.6%)
recorded the least resistance. Enterococcus spp. from SW, (77.8%) shows the highest
percentage of resistance, while Campylobacter spp. from SWs (33.3%) show the least
percentage of occurrence. Susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotics could also be altered by
the impact of environmental and human activities on such isolates which possibly results
in the development and selection of antibiotic resistant strains.
