NATIONAL CENTRE FOR THE CONTROL OF SMALL ARMS AND LIGHT WEAPONS (NCCSALW’S) AND ARMS PROFILERATION IN NIGERIA: CHALLENGES & PROSPECTS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The uncontrolled proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALWs) posed a grave threat to Nigeria’s national security, human development, and socio-economic stability. This study critically assessed the role of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) in tackling arms proliferation in Nigeria. It explored key drivers such as weak governance, corruption, porous borders, terrorism, poverty, and youth unemployment. The study evaluated the Centre’s strategies, legal frameworks, and policy interventions since its inception, identifying its contributions, institutional limitations, and operational challenges. Relying on a qualitative research design and data obtained through key informant interviews and document analysis, the research provided evidence of both progress and persistent gaps in the Centre’s operations. Based on the findings, the study recommended strengthening inter-agency collaboration, increasing manpower and technical capacity, enhancing border control mechanisms, and improving public awareness on arms control. These insights aim to support policymakers and stakeholders in reinforcing national efforts toward sustainable peace and security in Nigeria.
