Abstract

Abstract Unemployment remains one of the major socio-economic challenges confronting Nigeria, particularly among youths and graduates. Skill acquisition programmes have increasingly been recognized as effective strategies for promoting self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and economic empowerment. This study examined skill acquisition as a tool for addressing unemployment challenges in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design using both primary and secondary sources of data. Findings revealed that vocational and entrepreneurial skill acquisition programmes significantly enhance employment opportunities, reduce dependency on white-collar jobs, and promote small-scale business development. However, inadequate funding, poor training facilities, and limited access to start-up capital hinder programme effectiveness. The study concludes that skill acquisition plays a vital role in unemployment reduction and sustainable economic development. Recommendations include increased government support, improved training infrastructure, and access to financial assistance for trained individuals. Keywords: Skill Acquisition, Unemployment, Entrepreneurship, Youth Empowerment, Economic Development.
