Abstract

This study was undertaken to determine and assess the academic achievement of male and female students in Mathematics in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) from 2011-2015 in Cross River State. The study was carried out in Calabar South Local Government Area, where twelve (12) secondary schools were selected for the study. A sample of five thousand and twenty-one (5,021) students who sat for the West African Senior School Examination between 2011 and 2015 was used to find out whether or not gender differences created any imbalance in their educational achievement in mathematics. Three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The collection of data was done by the use of students’ result analysis register, interviews, and observations were employed as secondary instruments. The data collected were analyzed using statistical tables and percentages. It was revealed that students’ outcomes in mathematics differ between males and females, with the males performing better than the females. Recommendations were made based on findings.
