Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper discusses the mismatch between the contemporary church buildings of the Catholic church in Enugu, Nigeria, and the depiction of religious narratives. The majority of modern church buildings concentrate on both practical use and appearance rather than on the theological value, creating sacred spaces that have lost the connection with their spiritual nature as well as their storytelling. The project proposes to demonstrate how architecture can be a conscious aid to religious narration, making the churches a visual and quasi-physical embodiment of catholic teachings and sustaining liturgy and reinforcing the spiritual affiliation of the congregants. It delivers a story-based form of design with the focus on the classic Christian symbol of the Ichthys (fish). It is a spiritual path of worshippers in the way it determines the shape and layout: the In a nutshell, vital suggestions apply as follows: i. Narrative Symbolism: The use of narrative, like religious imagery and symbols, such as the Ichthys, should be integrated in the design as early in the planning process as possible by architects and church leaders. ii. Context and Culture Visibility: Cater towards the local context and community by using color and local materials, and cultural motifs to support the community identity and the feeling of belonging. iii. Improve Liturgical Flow and Accessibility: Design spaces that support a clear spiritual progression and are accessible to everyone. iv. Adopt Passive and Sustainable Strategies: Use natural light and ventilation to create comfortable, eco-friendly worship environments.
