ANTI-MICROBIAL ACTIVITIES OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACTS OF TERMINALIA CATAPPA (ALMOND) LEAF OBTAINED IN KAURA NAMODA
Abstract
Terminalia catappa, commonly known as the almond leaf, is a medicinal plant that has been used for centuries in traditional medicine. Its leaves contain various phytochemicals that have been scientifically proven to possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. The antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extract of Terminelia Catapa was carried out. The present investigation has been carried out to evaluate the antibacterial activities of ethanolic extracts of Terminalia catappa leaves against two bacterial pathogens and dermatophytic fungi namely Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton tonsurans respectively. Antibacterial and Antifungal activity was assessed by agar disc diffusion method. The activities of the extracts were measured by zone of inhibition . Among the various concentrations (0.6, 0.3, 0.25, 0.75 andc0.038gm/ml), 0.3gm/ml was found to be very effective having highest zone of inhibition. These results proved that terminelia catapa has significant antibacterial activity especially against gastro- enteritic bacteria like S. aureus. E. coli. In vivo investigation should be carried on the leaf extract to confirm the in vitro results obtained during the course of this study.
