DELINEATION OF AQUIFER UNITS USING ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY METHOD IN UMUSETI, SOUTH-SOUTH NIGERIA.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study employed the Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) technique of the electrical resistivity method to delineate aquifer units in Umuseti, South-South Nigeria. Resistivity data were acquired along a 600 m traverse and interpreted using master curve matching and iterative modelling. The results of the processed resistivity data revealed an H-type curve characterized by a high–low–high resistivity sequence, indicating three major subsurface layers. The first layer consists of lateritic topsoil with high resistivity values ≥2000 Ωm. The second layer has resistivity ≤500 Ωm indicating sandy clay region. Abundant groundwater can be exploited in the third layer with resistivity ≥5000 Ωm at the depth of 70m with thickness of 58m. The results confirm the presence of a viable aquifer unit within the third layer, demonstrating the effectiveness of the resistivity method in identifying groundwater-bearing formations in the Niger Delta environment. The study provides reliable subsurface information for groundwater development in Umuseti and highlights the need for appropriate geophysical survey before sinking water borehole.
