ENTERPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND EMPLOYMENT GENERATION IN NIGERIA (ASTUDY OF UMUAHIA SOUTH G.A OF ABIA STATE)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Entrepreneurship development has increasingly become a critical strategy for addressing unemployment and stimulating economic growth in developing economies. Nigeria, like many developing nations, faces persistent challenges related to job scarcity, youth unemployment, and economic instability. In response, entrepreneurship has been widely recognized as a viable mechanism for employment generation and economic empowerment.
This research investigates the role of entrepreneurship development in generating employment opportunities in Nigeria, with a particular focus on Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State. The study seeks to examine how entrepreneurial initiatives contribute to job creation, income generation, and overall community development.
The research adopted a descriptive survey design to collect data from selected entrepreneurs, small business owners, and residents within Umuahia South Local Government Area. Primary data were obtained through questionnaires and interviews, while secondary data were sourced from textbooks, journals, government publications, and online academic materials.
Findings from the study reveal that entrepreneurship development significantly contributes to employment creation by encouraging individuals to establish small and medium-scale enterprises. The study also identifies several constraints affecting entrepreneurship growth, including limited access to finance, inadequate government support, poor infrastructure, and lack of entrepreneurial education.
The research concludes that entrepreneurship development plays a vital role in addressing unemployment challenges in Nigeria. It recommends that government and private institutions strengthen support systems for entrepreneurs by providing financial assistance, training programs, improved infrastructure, and policies that promote business growth.
