Abstract

ABSTRACT Staff training and development have become indispensable tools for improving employee competence, organizational efficiency, and competitive advantage in modern business organizations. This study examined the problems and prospects of staff training and development in business organizations using Nigeria Breweries Plc as a case study. The study adopted Human Capital Theory and Organizational Learning Theory as analytical frameworks. A descriptive survey research design was employed, while data were collected through questionnaires and relevant secondary materials. Findings revealed that staff training and development significantly enhance employee productivity, job performance, innovation, and organizational growth. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, poor training needs assessment, limited management support, and employee resistance were identified as major constraints affecting effective training programmes. The study concludes that despite existing challenges, staff training and development remain vital for organizational sustainability and performance improvement. The study recommends continuous investment in employee capacity building, adoption of modern training technologies, and establishment of systematic evaluation mechanisms.
