Abstract

ABSTRACT The study examined strategies for improving classroom facilities in Nigerian universities, using Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, as a case study. The purpose of the research was to assess the current condition of classroom facilities, identify challenges affecting their improvement, and suggest effective strategies to enhance teaching and learning environments. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Data were collected from sixty (60) respondents comprising students, lecturers, and administrative staff of the university through structured questionnaires. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentages and frequency tables. Findings revealed that although ATBU has made efforts toward maintaining and improving classroom facilities, challenges such as inadequate funding, poor maintenance culture, overcrowding, and lack of modern instructional tools still persist. The study also found that classroom improvement has a significant impact on students’ performance, lecturers’ productivity, and the overall learning experience. The study concludes that effective classroom improvement requires a sustainable approach involving adequate funding, regular maintenance, adoption of modern technologies, and the promotion of a positive maintenance culture within the institution. It recommends that the university management and government should collaborate to provide sufficient resources for infrastructure development, ensure routine renovation of classrooms, and integrate ICT tools into the learning environment to enhance educational quality and efficiency.
