Abstract

A pot experiment was conducted in a screen house to evaluate the effects of poultry manure and phosphorus on soil properties, sesame-growth, chemical composition and yield characteristics in a sandy loan in semi-arid soil of Maiduguri, Nigeria. The treatment include control, 30kg/ha phosphorus, 45kg/ha phosphorus, 60kg/ha phosphorus, 10tons/ha poultry manure, 30kg/ha phosphorus + 10tons/ha poultry manure, 45kg/ha phosphorus+10tons/ha poultry manure, 60kg/ha phosphorus + 10tons/ha poultry manure. The treatment was laid down in a completely randomized design with three replicates. Their performance was compared, combined application of phosphorus with 10tons/ha poultry manure, gave or increased plant height, number of leaves, leaf area index, dry matter yield of shoot and plant nutrient content of sesame significantly (p>0.05) compared to applications of 30kg/ha phosphorus, 45kg/ha phosphorus, 60kg/ha phosphorus, and control. However, the 60kg/ha phosphorus + 10tons/ha poultry manure had the best effect on growth, yield characteristics and nutrient content of sesame. The 10tons/ha poultry manure can be use as substitute for 60kg/ha phosphorus + 10tons/ha poultry manure.
