COMPENSATION MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES AND EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE ; A STUDY OF COMMERCIAL BANKS IN DELTA STATE
Abstract
This study investigates the effect of compensation management strategies on employee performance in selected commercial banks in Delta State, Nigeria. The primary objective was to examine how various compensation components such as salary structure, bonuses and incentives, fringe benefits, and non-monetary rewards impact key aspects of employee performance including motivation, productivity, and commitment. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, utilizing both quantitative data from structured questionnaires and qualitative insights from interviews with bank managers. The sample consisted of employees across multiple branches of commercial banks in the Agbor. Findings reveal that effective compensation management significantly influences employee performance. Salary structures that are competitive and transparent enhance job satisfaction and reduce turnover intentions. Performance-based bonuses and incentives were found to be strong motivators, while benefits such as health insurance and transport allowances contributed to employees’ overall well-being and engagement. Additionally, non-monetary rewards such as recognition, career development opportunities, and flexible work arrangements were shown to increase employee loyalty and organizational citizenship behavior. The study concludes that a balanced combination of monetary and non-monetary compensation strategies leads to improved employee performance. It recommends that commercial banks adopt a holistic compensation approach that is regularly reviewed and aligned with both organizational goals and employee expectations. The implications of the findings highlight the importance of strategic compensation planning in achieving sustainable human resource outcomes and organizational effectiveness.
