Abstract

This study examines the socio-economic impact of the University of Delta State, Agbor (UNIDEL), on the Ika community in Delta State, Nigeria. The problem addressed is the uncertainty surrounding the actual socio-economic benefits and challenges posed by the recent establishment of UNIDEL within the host community. The key objective of the study was to assess the extent to which the presence of UNIDEL has influenced employment opportunities, business development, social infrastructure, and educational advancement in the Ika community. Anchored on the Institutional Theory, the research analyzed how an educational institution influences the social norms, economic activities, and cultural patterns of its host environment. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, targeting residents of Ika community. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire distributed to 300 respondents selected via stratified and simple random sampling methods. Findings revealed significant positive socio-economic outcomes, including increased employment opportunities, expansion of local businesses, improvement in infrastructure, and enhanced educational access. However, challenges such as rising living costs and social tensions were also reported. In conclusion, UNIDEL plays a crucial role in promoting socio-economic development in Ika, though strategic interventions are required to address emerging community concerns. The study recommends improved town-gown relations, targeted community development projects, and sustainable infrastructural planning to maximize the university’s developmental contributions.
