Abstract

ABSTRACT Primary Health Care (PHC) is essential for effective healthcare delivery in rural areas. However, poor distribution and limited accessibility of health facilities continue to affect PHC services in many parts of Nigeria. This study focuses on the mapping and spatial analysis of Primary Health Care Centres (PHCCs) in Yusufari Local Government Area of Yobe State using geospatial techniques. A survey research design was adopted for the study. Primary data were obtained through field visits using handheld GPS devices to capture the geographic coordinates of PHCCs, while attribute data were collected through oral interviews on facility characteristics. The data were processed and analyzed using ArcGIS software. Spatial analysis techniques such as buffer analysis and Average Nearest Neighbor (ANN) analysis were used to assess the distribution pattern and accessibility of PHCCs. The results revealed that PHCCs in Yusufari are unevenly distributed with a dispersed spatial pattern, leaving several communities beyond the recommended 5 km access distance to healthcare services. The study concludes that the existing distribution of PHC centres does not adequately support equitable healthcare access. It recommends the use of GIS-based planning to guide the proper siting and improvement of PHC facilities in the study are
