EVALUATION OF CABBAGE MIXED WITH HONEY FOR GASTRIC ULCER TREATMENT IN ABINO RATS
Abstract
Honey is substance produced by bees from the nectar of plants. It is used as a medicine, It is known for its biological properties, having antibacterial, antifungal and healing properties. While Brassica leracea was cultivated from ancient times and used as food and in herbal medicine. It has been well known that cabbage juice can reduce constipation and has also been used as laxative, as an antidote to mushroom poisoning, or a treatment of hangovers and headache. This work was designed to explore the efficacy of Cabbage mixed with Honey on the healing of gastric ulcer in experimental rats. Twenty-four albino rats (100+5g) were used and allocated into 6 equal groups. Croup I was used as negative control while group 2-4 were induced with ethanol (Iml) orally. Cabbage leaf juice mixed with Honey (20ml/kg) has more healing effect (17.73-26.95%) to compare to Omeprazole (20mg/kg) which has (8.51-14.14%). The extractible muscus weight was lower in ulcer control group (0.010-0.045g) when compared with normal control value (0.035-0.045g), but was significantly increased following Cabbage mixed with Honey, which had (0.025-0.030g). Pepsin activity was higher in ulcer control rats (28.0-32.8 µmol tyrosine/ml) than the normal control group (15.7-19.4 µmol tyrosine/ml) while Cabbage mixed with Honey had reduced values of pepsin activity in rats (19.4-22.7 µmol tyrosine/ml). It is concluded that Cabbage mixed with Honey could be used for healing of gastric ulcer.
