AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE FABRICATION OF SEMIADJUSTABLEARTICULATOR USING LOCALLY SOURCED CONTENT
Abstract
This investigation explores the fabrication of a semi-adjustable articulator using locally sourced
materials, aiming to provide an affordable and effective solution for dental practices in
resource-limited settings. The semi-adjustable articulator is an essential tool in prosthodontics,
enabling accurate replication of mandible movements for the creation of dental restorations.
However, commercial articulators are often prohibitively expensive for many regions. This
study focuses on identifying and utilizing readily available materials to construct a costeffective yet functional articulator. The methodology includes a detailed analysis of the
mechanical requirements of a semi-adjustable articulator, followed by the selection of
appropriate local materials such as aluminium, stainless steel, and high-density polymers. The
fabrication process involves standard machining and assembly techniques, ensuring the device
meets the necessary precision and durability standards. Performance testing is conducted by
comparing the locally fabricated articulator’s accuracy and reliability with that of commercially
available models, using a series of standardized tests and clinical evaluations Preliminary
results indicate that the locally sourced articulator achieves comparable performance to
commercial versions, with minor variations within acceptable clinical limits. The study
concludes that with appropriate design and fabrication techniques, locally sourced materials can
be effectively used to produce a semi-adjustable articulator, potentially lowering costs and
increasing accessibility for dental practitioners in low-resource settings. Further research is
recommended to refine the design and explore the scalability of production.
