Abstract

ABSTRACT Deposit of coal has been reported from the Gombe Formation and currently Ashaka Cement company is mining this coal at Maiganga Village. However, understanding the depositional environment the coal received little attention. To determine its depositional environment, facies analysis was employed. Based on facies analysis, the strata was group into three facies associations. These facies indicate that the Gombe Formation at Maiganga mine pit was deposited in deltaic environment within mouth bar, distributary channel and interdistributary channel. The coals of Gombe Formation were deposited in interdistributary channel environment. Our comprehension of the paleoenvironmental circumstances of Maiganga coal deposition has improved as a result of these discoveries.
