DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF SOLAR POWERED SUPER CAPACITOR ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM FOR EQUIPMENTS AND BUILDINGS
Abstract
The aim of this project is to design and construct a solar powered supercapacitor device as key storage technology for their excellent properties in terms of power density, charging and discharging cycles, life span and a wide operative temperature rang etc. The numerical modelling of the supercapacitor energy storage system is also explained and implemented as computer modelling in MATLAB Simulink software. In recent times of energy scarcity, energy harvesting from renewable energy sources has been the prime goal of the research community. Adjacently, researchers are also engaged to devise methods for storing this energy in the form of electricity. Super capacitors are one of the most efficient energy storage devices. Super capacitors form a bridge between conventional capacitors and secondary ion batteries. This paper offers a concise review on the renaissance of a conventional capacitor to electro chemical double layer capacitor or super capacitor. Capacitors are fundamental electrical circuit elements that store electrical energy in the order of microfarads and assist in filtering. Capacitors have two main applications; one of which is a function to charge or discharge electricity. This function is applied to smoothing circuits of power supplies, backup circuits of microcomputers, and timer circuits that make use of the periods to charge or discharge electricity. The other is a function to block the flow of DC. This function is applied to filters that extract or eliminate particular frequencies. We the application and development of the super capacitor energy storage system (SCES) system, energy storage technology has been greatly improved in modern power systems. The SCES provides required buffer for photovoltaic power system and plays an important role in improving operation stability of a power system. This paper designs the construction of solar powered energy storage system with a super capacitor as the energy storage device. In particular a Stand-alone PV system constituted by the photovoltaic and super capacitor sources is simulated in MATLAB Simulink software with DC to DC buck boast converter to prove that super capacitor as power supply device. The designs system offers a preferable reference for applications of the super capacitor in the field of regeneration energy and quality improvement of power using solar (photovoltaic array).
